Angels and Demons, Myths and Legends.

It's been six months since Reginald Baskin became a vampire too fat to live happily with the beautiful undead — six months in which Reginald and his two-thousand-year-old maker Maurice have learned that safety does not come with power. These days, Maurice is Deacon of the Vampire Nation, but plenty beneath Maurice are still plotting to depose him … or dispose of him.

But when a new and ancient threat rears its head, the Nation faces extinction and the truest of deaths — and Reginald, Maurice, and Nikki might be the only vampires able to stop it.

This sequel to the cult hit picks up where Fat Vampire left off, following a trio of unlikely heroes down a path of myth and superstition into truths that have lied buried for centuries — pitting the world’s darkness against the unfathomable power of its angry creators.

This fresh twist on the tired old undead myth is the second in the Fat Vampire series by Johnny B. Truant — author of many bestselling series including Invasion, The Beam, Unicorn Western, The Dream Engine, Robot Proletariat, and more.

I am beginning to become annoyed at how these books are published. Originally, serial books were free if you paid for the magazine they were printed in. The price of the part of the eight-book series has gone up.

Ok, it's still inexpensive. And the book is almost as funny as the first, now that we've gotten over the giggles about a fat vampire.

I am ambivalent about buying the third book, but "Tastes like Chicken", which is never explained, is funny enough to shell out $3.99. The author's got to make a living. And, while there is no cliffhanger per se, I still wanted to read more.

Fat Vampire 2 Tastes Like Chicken edition by Johnny B Truant Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I loved the first book in the fat vampire series and it was no surprise to me when I loved the second book just as much. It was great to see what the characters were doing after the end of the first book. Reginald is a fantastic character when it comes to being pathetic but in a very lovable/clumsy puppy sort of way. He finds some cool new aspects of his vampire powers, and I found myself wishing there were an illustrated version of this book available. Reggie and Co. get to do some traveling and new forms of supernaturals are introduced. I feel like I can't review this book very well, because everything that happens is important to the plot of the story. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone.

My one small criticism is that I had to go back and read the "big reveal" ending twice. After reading through it the first time I wasn't quite sure if what I read was real or a lie... I can't explain here without giving away the ending. I'll just say is was a 'did that really just happen' moment, and I had to read it twice to make sure I got what was going on. It wasn't badly written, it really is the situation in the book. Even the characters are questioning if what happened was real or not.
The first one in this series gave a fresh, new twist on the vampire tale and introduced Reginald, the fat vampire. His story continues with the decimation of numerous vampires at a council meeting. Two explanations are given a gas explosion (unlikely), or angels (unbelievable). The evidence points towards the latter and Reginald and his rag tag group must race against time, only thirty days, to find a solution to the deadly ultimatum they are given. Action, suspense, and character growth abound in this delightful sequel that will have you craving more. The relationship between Reginald and Nikki gets very interesting to say the least. If you like the first one, you will need to read this one!
Fat Vampire 2 was a step up from Fat Vampire 1. It is always nice to see the transformation, but the humor in this one edged things up as did the plot. Sequels always tend to be bigger, and this one as huge in scope. It uses some of my favorite tropes. If you are wondering what the difference between a trope and cliche is, I think a cliche is worn out that comes off as low quality. A trope is an acceptable story device.

Small Spoiler Here you have the higher power being bound thing. It was not really a twist or anything. The first incidence of the frail, malformed creature lets you know that he has wicked power. Higher powers always allow themselves to be captured and make a big show about escaping.

That whole scene was awesome though. I do not care if it seems familiar, I could picture the havoc and the destruction. We are dealing with vampires during the day, and there are some great opportunities for chaos. Mr. Truant (hah!) leverages that scene perfectly.

What follows is a story that almost seems like a social commentary on the direction of the vampire mythos. The whole beautiful vampire thing that people attribute to Twilight. That series just made it popular with pre-teen girls and castrati. The trend goes back to Dracula with Gary Oldman as the seducer, and Interview With the Vampire. Johnny B. Truant attacks the trend head on by making it into a plot device.

The search for information is the kind of story that really resonates with me. I hate judging things that feed right into my preferences, because I feel that I cannot be an impartial judge. The mystery around the powerful being really engrossed me. It was developed well. Johnny also does not eff around. He leaves enough open to keep mystery, but he is not a bastard telling us only ultra-vague pseud-mystical garbage. You really are not left with too many nonsensical questions like "Where did they come from? Why were they created?" The story of the FV world is in the future. It is about survival, and unless there are clues to solving the mystery in the past that have yet to be uncovered there is no reason to be all mystical about it.

Reginald will give or get a lot of exposition. His status as a Vampire Thinker means that his internal monologues guide the reader to conclusions. Even if Reginald is not sure at least he and the reader are on the same page. This is not a first person novel. Johnny does it (I assume) in order to keep things moving and keep them from going down too many blind alleys. Reginald and the others in this series are not Gandalf with all his arcane knowledge dropping phrases here and there to events in a history we can't learn about or places that are never visited or described, ever. I do not mind getting the information later, or it being vague as a plot device, but being mystical to be mystical annoys me. You can do it sometimes, but not all the damn time (Reading the books made me want to yank Gandalf's beard off)!

The ending leaves a few things for next time. Unlike Fat Vampire 1 the ending here is monumental. Considering that FV 1 had a coup that might come as a surprise. However, unlike FV 1 the ending contains a handful of things that are related, and yet unrelated, to be picked up in later episodes. That is good, as long as I do not need to wait till FV 20 to get a conclusion.

I am a little over halfway through Fat Vampire 4 and I can honestly say Fat Vampire 2 is still my favorite. I will get into the tiny things in Fat Vampire 4 that edged this one over when I review Fat Vampire 4. A lot of open questions remain to be picked up, but being half way through FV 4 more are opening up without any being closed. I hope the series does not get too bloated. I love that its extremely tight and fun to read. FV 2 had an ending that gives closure, while keeping enough for next time. This one is definitely a read, but you need to read the first. This is a serial now, not a series of standalone novellas about the antics of a Fat Vampire (that would have been fun too, fyi).

I blame Sean and Dave's influence for its highly serialized nature. I swear I thought Johnny was going to have a series of hilarious events with Reginald Baskin as a straight up comedy. I love good stories though. Keep 'em coming.

Pick up FV 1 and 2, then tune in to Johnny, Sean, and Dave on Better Off Undead.
Fat Vampire 2 Tastes Like Chicken is the hilariously titled sequel to Author Johnny B. Truant's Supernatural Comedy Fat Vampire.

It's been six months since the hijinks of the first novel, and fledgling vampire Reginald Baskins is finally starting to get used to his new, odd life. He's built himself a system by which to feed, gained a smokin' hot girlfriend, and gained balance in his world - albeit a bit shakily. But the strange occurrence at the last Vampire Council Meeting stills haunts him - not the many deaths, he could care less about all the pompous vamps that tried to execute him. He worries about what it was that caused such a disaster, and in the form of a shape-shifting incubus he gets his answer.

Now, if only he could remember the number to that pizza place.

Johnny B. Truant once again brings the funny with this book, bringing a satirical twist to the vampire genre. This isn't your run-of-the-mill sexy vampire. Reginald is overweight, clumsy, nerdy, and would rather munch on some crackers than have sex with his girlfriend. I found myself having to pause to laugh before continuing my reading of this book, and am only saddened by the fact it took me this long to pick up book two in this terrifically funny series!
